Have You Heard The News  (International)

Today in history: 53 years ago..

.

Now a cultural icon, he made his first public performance today, 53 years ago. It was July 30th 1954, and Elvis was to play his very first live show. According to the book “Elvis A-Z” by Fred Worth and Steve Tamerius”, Elvis had performed at the Bon Air Club earlier that month, but no exact date is known. However, the show on July 30th 1954 at the Overton Park Shell in Memphis is the very first that had Elvis’s name on the advertising poster.

Elvis, accompanied by Winfield “Scotty” Moore (electric guitar) and Bill Black (slap bass) performed, billed as The Blue Moon Boys, second to Slim Whitman who was headlining. Elvis was so nervous during this show that his legs shook uncontrollably. His wide-legged pants emphasized his leg movements, apparently causing the young women in the audience to go ‘crazy’. And the rest… is history.
