No
doubt that Elvis Week is approaching fast. It’s
been raining imports for weeks now. Here’s a
list of the latest releases: “Transmission”,
“The American Way/Sound of the City”, “Elvis at
the Jungle”, “Early Morning Rain”, “Rock and
Blues”,… Two of these get a separate
introduction, because they stand out of the
pack. “A Legendary Performer 9”: see news
posting earlier, and “Kicking and Rolling”,
which features the famous midnight concert of
February 18, 1973 – the show in which Elvis is
attacked on stage.
This last CD was made available 7 years ago,
under the title “I’ll Whoop His Ass” but with a
horrible sound quality. This time, the Straight
Arrow label presents the show as an excellent
soundboard – which it is. Halfway through the
concert, Elvis is attacked on stage by four
individuals. The following 2 minutes are filled
with screams from the audience, and panic. This
unusual scene ends with a huge applause, when
the attackers are taken away off stage. Elvis
picks up his mike, and comments: “If they want
to shake my hand, that’s fine. If he wants to
get tough, I’ll whoop his ass!”… and he resumes
the show with “I Can’t Stop Loving You”, as if
nothing has happened.
